The Red Eyes in the Darkness

Cold winter nights, when everything seems hazy and mysterious in the fog, what can happen if someone is alone on a deserted road at that time? This story is about one such experience which is repeated again and again in our family even today. This incident happened with my great grandfather’s sister – Saraswati Devi, hearing which even today gives me goosebumps.
Main characters
Saraswati Devi was 21 years old at that time. She was very good at studies, calm and helpful by nature, but also very courageous from within. In those days, girls were rarely allowed to go out of the house, but Saraswati impressed everyone with her behavior.
The beginning of the story – The village and its secrets

It was the year 1974. This incident happened in a small village Supela in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The village was very quiet and simple.
But like every village, there were some stories prevalent in this too which were heard only in the silence of the night, from the mouth of the elders sitting on the platform.
One of them was – Chhalava.
Chhalva, a spirit that misleads humans by changing their form. The people of the village used to say – “If someone calls you at night, do not turn back without thinking, it is possible that he is not a human being.”
One day Saraswati had gone to her aunt’s house in the nearby village Palia, which was about a kilometer away. Everyone at home had said – “Don’t go alone, the sun has set” but she said – “I will return in a short while.”
Fog, cold wind and deserted road.
It was a cold December night. At 7 in the evening, there was a thick fog all around. Saraswati had a battery operated torch and had wrapped herself tightly in a shawl. She was walking slowly on the deserted road of the village. The entire road was quiet, only the sound of her footsteps and the rustling of leaves could be heard.
When she reached the middle of the road, she felt something strange. As if someone was following her. But when she looked back, there was no one.
First look – The Red Eyes in the Darkness

Suddenly she looked ahead with her torch – a black figure was standing right in the middle of the road. Like a human, but completely black like smoke. It had no clear shape, only its red glowing eyes were clearly visible.
The shadow was staring at them. Saraswati stopped right there. She turned the torch towards it several times but its face, hands or any body was not visible, only a shadow and two eyes.
Changing shape of figure
As soon as Saraswati turned back, the figure started moving towards her. But the strange thing was that it was changing its shape while walking – sometimes it looked like an old woman, sometimes like a child, sometimes like an animal. But every time its colour remained dark black and the same red eyes.
This was not an ordinary spirit. This was the one about whom we had heard stories from grandmothers in the village – Chhalaava.
Trying to escape

Saraswati ran in fear. Her legs were trembling, but she had to save her life. She ran towards the same aunt’s house from where she had come. The road was sloping and slippery, but she could not see anything at that time. From behind it seemed as if that thing was flying over her head.
She shouted – “Help! Is there anyone?”
She somehow reached her aunt’s house running.
As soon as she knocked on aunt’s door, uncle came out from inside. He pulled Saraswati inside and closed the door. Saraswati’s body was trembling, no sound was coming out of her mouth. Aunt gave her water to drink.
She saw that there was a slight mark on Saraswati’s foot, as if someone had tried to catch her.
Saraswati did not speak anything that whole night. Her eyes were wide open and her face had turned pale. Aunt called a wise woman in the village – Vimala Aunty, who knew black magic.
Vimla Aunty saw Saraswati and said – “She is under the influence of deception.” She burnt some threads and neem leaves, and chanted some mantras while walking around Saraswati.
Next morning her father came to pick her up. Saraswati opened her mouth for the first time and told everything – the black figure, the red eyes, the changing form, the chase and that horrifying feeling. The whole family was shocked.
Vimla Aunty said – “It was deception, whose stories you used to listen to laughingly, today you have faced it yourself.”
Village bustle

After this incident, there was a stir in the whole village. People started coming out of their houses less. Especially women had stopped going alone to the fields or to the neighbor’s house.
The priest of the village temple conducted a havan in the entire village. A Tantrik Baba was called, who performed a puja under the Peepal tree in the middle of the village and said – “This spirit has been wandering in this area for years, at one time it must have been a human being but now it has turned into a deceit.”
Saraswati’s life changed
After that incident, Saraswati never went out of the house alone. She did not get married in her life and spent her life taking care of her younger siblings. Today she is 70 years old, and as soon as the sun sets, she closes the windows.
Even today she shivers remembering that night. She once said – “That thing was not human, but it definitely knew that I was scared. It was drawing strength from my fear.”
Final Thoughts – Is the Deception Still There?
Does the phantom still exist? Does it still roam the deserted streets? Or has it claimed someone else?
This story is a warning to all those who think that such things are just stories.
Sometimes fear is not just an emotion, but a reality.
